I’m starting to think about MdS as a restful vacation with a bit running thrown in. I’m not underestimating the desert...
Fan Girl! 121/365
LizaSo I’ve been a big fan of Alex Hutchinson’s writing for a long time.
His book, Endure: Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance, is excellent.
Anyway, I figured winning a 100km race and getting on the US team was a good excuse to tweet at him. Right? If that’s not an excuse to be a fan, I’ll never have one.
So yesterday I wrote:
And this morning he tweeted back. (!!!) I had to clean the Chex Mix dust off my fingers before I could get my phone to register my frantic finger tapping. (I’ve been eating everything in site, and when I had to stop for gas, I put a dent in the gas station snack aisle.)
How pleased was I? As pleased as a fan could be. 🙂 I finished off a bag of hot peanuts while I try to figure out a witty response. Because that was called for, right?
Anyway, in the book, endurance is defined as “the struggle to continue against the mounting desire to stop.” So I wrote:
Not bad, eh?
That was about as much fan girl-ing as I could sustain. I returned to snacking happily.
What’s (also) making me happy: This description of the amenities at the place the World 100km Champs will be held.
Running: Not one bit!!

Liza- Congrats on your great run this past weekend! The Umstead 100 happened the same weekend with not-so-terrific weather (it even snowed at night). I thought you would enjoy seeing the who the top finishers were in the past 24 years of the race –
