We always start Trail Camp off with a night run — over nice rocky and uneven terrain.  “Welcome!  Here’s a headlamp.  Let’s head out into the night.”  That run and the squid hat really set the tone for the weekend.  We’ve only had one casualty over the years.  Well, two if you count Pam Smith almost being flattened by the first guy’s tumble.  We started brining our own first aid gear after that incident because the camp’s nurse’s station turned out to be stocked mostly with thousands of cotton balls and tiny bandaids — and a few turkey basters.  I irrigated the poor fellow’s abrasions with a turkey baster and gave him two handfuls of bandaids to take back with him to his bunk room.  He  did an admirable job staying in good spirits.

We never really camp up with a name for the running camp besides Team RWB Trail Running Camp, so I just started using Trail Camp as a formal noun.  Nobody challenged me, and it lent itself to “What happens at Trail Camp, stays at Trail Camp jokes.”  Do any of you have a suggestion for a good trail running camp name — that would have both sponsored veterans and non-veterans attending?  (Asking for a friend.)

Headed out to run 10 miles at a heartrate of 136.  Might take me a while…
