Pandemic blogging

LizaLiza

The kids are both out of school due to the pandemic, and I’m forcing Asa to keep a journal until he goes back, so I figured I should do the same. After not writing for so long, it’s hard to get going, so I’m just going to give a quick accounting of what we’re up to before I get to work answering emails about canceled races.

Asa just got his first on-line assignments for school. He’s clearing off a desk we have in the living room to make space for himself.  Up until now, he’s been spending his school-free time learning card tricks on YouTube. I feel like he might be able to get a job once the virus isolation is over.

VIDEO OF TRICK

Ruby was just sitting on the kitchen floor eating a bowl of yogurt and raisins, but now she’s gone and it’s very quiet. Lord, help me.

UTSA is closed for students, but Eliot is still required to go into the office. I’m hoping that changes soon, and he can work online from home. I’m concerned about his health. I promise.

As for me, I wrote the good folks I’m coaching that one of the grades that students on NOLS backcountry courses get is for their tolerance for adversity and uncertainty. We use a soft definition of adversity, of course. Right now, I’m giving myself an ‘A’ for Uncertainty (10 out of 10! ;)), but with the full-on 24/7 Ruby time, my Tolerance of Adversity and Uncertainty grade might end up somewhere around a C+. (D- if you check back in around 4pm.)

Happily, the kids are old enough that I can sit them in front of a movie and run loops around the neighborhood without worrying about their safety. Also, my folks got a phone.

Running: 80 minutes easy listening to The Great Influenza on Audible.

That’s a really neat trick! Hopefully he doesn’t use his powers to make his broccoli disappear at dinner time! (Fun to see activity hear again!)

Hi Allen! His trick today was the single hand card shuffle. YouTube is pretty great. How goes life for you?

I really can’t complain – working from home and annoying the dogs and cats. Short runs through the neighborhood (which, since I never run through the neighborhood, is a bit alarming to some of the neighbors since they are not used to seeing me look so close to needing medical attention, and also assume something horrible must be chasing me otherwise, why would I be doing that to myself???). Those tricks require dexterity, determination, and lots of practice – I’m so impressed by people that master them!

I will share your praise with Asa. I have become a poor audience. 😉 That’s so funny about your neighbors. There are a lot more walkers out now on my 2-mile loop and it starts to feel awkward the third time I go by folks.
