Running illegally in VA 209/365

LizaLiza

I was finishing up the last two miles of a 20 mile run this morning when I got some legal counsel. I was running up a neighborhood street when a guy came out of his house and hollered at me. “It’s illegal to run on the road in Virginia!” I was running on the lefthand side of the road and the streets in the neighborhood were wide. There wasn’t any traffic. I’d seen maybe 4 cars my whole run. I continued on up the street. The guy got in his car and drove past me. He yelled out the window: “It’s illegal to run on the road in Virginia!!” I gave him a thumbs up. I was pretty worked running in the heat and humidity, but I doubt I would have come up with anything to say regardless. The guy gunned his engine and yelled “ASSHOLE!!!!” at me.

Geez. What’s wrong with people these days???

Also, it turns out it is actually illegal in Virginia to run on the roads if a sidewalk is available. Who knew? Still, what goes on in your life that you feel like you need to yell this kind of information at people?

What’s making me happy:

Running: 20 miles easy. There was supposed to be some speed in there, but the humidity squashed me.

Um, I have been living and running in Virginia for 15 years and have never heard of this. I have heard of people being jerks, but would like to say in defense of my state that it is NOT the norm! Please come back and run again!

I didn’t know this….and I am la-la’ing so that I don’t! Once an officer pulled up next to me to see if I was wearing two earbuds and he asked me to move to the sidewalk (which is limited in my area) for safety, but didn’t tell me I was doing anything illegal.

Yeah, my parents looked it up. I didn’t look myself, because, like you said, la-la-ing. 🙂

I had a guy yell at me that running on Bright Angel Trail was illegal (or I guess against park rules). I smiled and said thank you (and kept running). He tried to “report me” to the guy leading a mule team but didn’t seem to make any headway with that. I did follow up with the rangers later to confirm that yes, he was wrong. Good thing for all those R2R2R FKT runners.

Wow! I can only imagine what the mule team driver was thinking.
