I’m starting to think about MdS as a restful vacation with a bit running thrown in. I’m not underestimating the desert...
Dead Albatross 44/365Liza
Today was lost to The Albatross, the Trail Sisters article about the incidence of harassment and unwanted attention on the trails. That’s my its working title for it.
Ah! Well a-day! What evil looks
Had I from old and young!
Instead of the cross, the albatross
About my neck was hung.
— Samuel Taylor Coleridge, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
We gathered so much information with our survey that it’s been hard to know how to present it. And there have been a bunch of us working on it — all with slightly different visions and writing styles. We keep working, but don’t seem to get any closer to being done with it.
Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.
Having a good editor look at my writing has been really fun, and has led down some great grammar rabbit holes. (You write out the numbers one to nine and then use numerals after that – as we all know. BUT if you’re using both in the same sentence, you get to choose — as far as I can tell. “I will drink between 2 and 92 cups of coffee today because that run yesterday really wiped me out.” UNLESS you decide you’re just going to do your own thing.)
Still, I’ve been working on this article in one form or another since October, and I don’t know that it’s making me a better person at this point. Mostly, it’s just confirmed what an incredibly slow writer I am and how muddled my thinking is by mom-ing. More importantly, for a long while it didn’t seem like the article was going to really have the impact it should.
And it’s not contributing to running. Today was supposed to be 80 minutes, not 30. It’d be one thing if the time I’ve invested was making the article better, but I don’t think that’s the case. You’ll see eventually. Regardless, I think I’m done with my bit of Part I.
Oh! Dream of joy! Is this indeed
The light-house top I see?
Is this the hill? Is this the kirk?
Is this mine own countree?
