Bird paint 34/365

I haven’t gotten around to washing our minivan this month. I didn’t get around to it last month either. Driving along the dirt roads at Bandera didn’t make it cleaner. And then a bird with some intestinal distress sat in a tree above it.

And the inside of the minivan was worse than the outside. (It’s true.)

All this is to say, I was feeling self-conscious when I drove up to the gate of the fancy community where Ruby’s little friend lives.  I worried the gate guard might actually turn us away. “I’m afraid your car is too much of an eyesore for the neighborhood, ma’am. Turn around.”

We were not refused entry, however. In fact, the gate guard was surprisingly friendly. My guess is the car was too just conspicuous to be worrisome. Someone up to no good in all the fanciness would drive a less eye-catching car. “Officer, it was a filthy minivan. The hood was splattered with white paint. Or maybe that was bird crap. There was a lot of it whatever it was.”

Maybe the gate guard just empathized with us. Or maybe she was tired of always waving gleaming Escalades through.

Whatever the case, I appreciated the lack of judgement. Ruby didn’t make C. cry this time, and I managed not to say anything to the other moms that outed me as a weirdo.  Success!
