Third time’s the charm, resolutions, and games

LizaLiza

This is the third time I’m writing this entry.  I did not expect computer and iPhone glitches to be the hurdle I would face with my 2016 blog-o-day resolution. Luckily the year is young, and I’m feeling hearty.

2016 Resolutions 1-10. (Kind of.)

1. Keep a daily “3 Things That Went Well Today” log.

The first entry in this log was:  1. I wasn’t charged for a can of Fat Tire beer on the plane home to San Antonio.

I don’t know if it bodes well for 2016 or not, or what it says about my values, but when the flight attendant dismissed my credit card with a wave of his hand, I knew what the first line of this log would be.  Ruby had wailed and squirmed her way through the first leg of the flight from DC to Nashville, and while no one applauded when we got off the plane, you could tell they were close.  Then she behaved like any good two year-old who was up three hours past her bedtime during a 90-minute layover in a crowded airport would.  So when I pulled the beverage and movie menu out of Ruby’s mouth on the flight to San Antonio, my eyes lingered on the beer offerings.  Now, Eliot and I have chosen careers that make spending money on plane beers financially irresponsible.  Swimming lessons or plane beers etc… But after I had to tie off Ruby’s seatbelt with the excess strap, I thought one plane beer might be justified.  I placed the order with equal parts guilt and fervor: “One apple juice, one hot chocolate, and one Fat Tire beer, please.”  Maybe it was because Ruby had finally fallen asleep by the time the flight attendant came back, or because it was his last flight of the day, or because the guy had made a resolution to give free beers to particularly haggard-looking mothers in 2016, but whatever the case, I toasted him heartily (in my head) with my tiny plastic cup of free beer.  I hope he enjoys some unexpected kindnesses in 2016 too.

Here’s Asa’s (forced) log entry for the day:

1. Getting a large chocolate chip cookie in the airport.

2. Mom reading my book to me.  (Rick Riordan’s Magnus Chase)

3. Playing Machi Koro with my cousins and my dad.

(If you haven’t played this game yet, and you’re a game person/family, you should get it.)

The rest of the resolutions are going to have to wait again.  There’s coaching to be done and Christmas decorations to take down  now.
