To Western or Not to Western?

LizaLiza

I’m working on gathering more volunteers for the Rocky 50 on February 8th today, so this’ll be a short post.  (And send me a note if you’d like to volunteer.  I guarantee it’ll be a great time — especially if I don’t have to fill the volunteer ranks from inmates at the Huntsville penitentiary.)

This was in my inbox this morning:

I wonder if nursepurse would like to sponsor an ultrarunner to Western States?

So that’s the question today.  Should I accept the WS spot?

Cons:

1.

2. I live in San Antonio.  We do have heat, but we don’t have big hills.  Western States would require a lot of time on my garage treadmill simulating long climbs and long descents.  Now, I love garage treadmill running as much as the next person, but at a certain point don’t you have to make peace with the terrain where you live and choose races that allow you to run outside — with friends?

Pros:

1. I had an awful race there a couple of years ago when I taunted the weather gods and there was hail and freezing rain the first few hours of the race.  It’d be nice to go back and put together a good race.

2.  If I did well, I’d have a chance to share RWB’s mission with more folks.

What do you blog readers think?

Buy the nursepurse and the registration. You could sell some of Asa’s legos to finance the race. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind.

He’s sleeping, but he heard me read that and got restless. There are some things we don’t joke about Don. Lego selling. Blasphemy. Maybe I could get some baby wipes company to sponsor me…

Salem, OR, elevation 250′. Just saying. 🙂

Apparently you can get $450 for a Leadville buckle on ebay!

Dude! You would play that card, eh? Shouldn’t you be training to take down another US record right now? Be careful, you might set yourself up for hateful text updates from my garage treadmill all spring. “Hi Pam, I’m on the treadmill running uphill. It’s 13700 degrees and the neighbors dog won’t stop staring at me. How are you doing?” I do have a kid to do those squats you did though…
Yeah… that whole Leadville buckle sale…

You know I wouldn’t play that card if I didn’t love you and want you at WS! And I would consider that text motivational: “If Liza can breast pump through a TM hill workout in 13700 degree Texas heat, surely I can go do a few repeats of my own.” Hope to see you in Squaw – just think what you could get for a WS buckle on e-bay! 😉

Well, I do need a backup plan for Asa’s college education if the Lego scholarship doesn’t come through. Belt buckles sales…
I am leaning so far towards Western States now, I’m about to fall off the fence. Thanks for the encouragement. I really appreciate it. 🙂
