Badwater Bound!

 

I am en route to Death Valley this morning to crew a friend at Badwater.  I’m really excited to witness the spectacle.  My friend wants to attempt to climb Mount Whitney after the race.  That’s my main role in the adventure: Get Doug up Whitney.  After 135 miles in 120 degree temps, the extra 22 miles and 6000 feet of vertical up to 

14, 494ft will be … a tall order.  Doug ran the race last year and is really only coming back to have a go at the original course: lowest point in the continental US to the highest point.

The 11 mile climb to the summit could take 12 hours — so if he finishes the race in 30-40 hours, well that’d make for a pretty long day… or three.
I packed all the gear necessary to support that length of trip, but without knowing what time of day he’ll finish or how his race will go, I’ll wait to figure out the details of the schedule until Tuesday.
So right now I’m  in a very clean rental van outside of Las Vegas en route to a Super Walmart for ice and sunscreen and the onto Pahrump, Nevada where there’s supposed to be a nice brothel museum.
