Runner’s World article

LizaLiza

My mother in-law is in town while Asa’s gooey eyeballs run their course (Thanks Kate!),  so I had time to run to the bookstore to check out the RW’s article.  $6.48 for a copy!  I tried to get the salesgirl to give me a discount since I was pictured inside, but she was indifferent to my 2×2″ fame.  It almost stopped me from splurging on a latte afterwards.

I was a bit bummed at first that RW focused on my struggles as a new mother and postpartum depression to the exclusion of mentioning how wonderful it is to be Asa’s mother.  Of course, my love, happiness and gratitude for Asa was not the point of  article.  Still, it won’t be as fun to show him the piece when he can read words other than “ASA, MOM, DAD, and LEGO.”  “So, Mom, it says here the ‘trails saved you…'”  I certainly don’t mean to say I wasn’t a disaster after Asa was born — especially when he’d cry from the minute Eliot left in the morning until he walked through the door at the end of the day, and my hair was falling out in chunks, and the nursing was touch and go, and I was in school full-time, and I really missed working in the mountains on month-long NOLS courses.  I just mean that it was a good “full catastrophe” disaster a la Zorba the Greek and Jon Kabat-Zinn.

“I’m a man, so I married. Wife, children, house, everything. The full catastrophe.”  — Zorba

I was very pleased they kept the jai alai quote though.  And, of course, it’s surreal and humbling be mentioned in the same article as Darcy Africa, Anita Ortiz, and Kasie Enman.  And it’s very nice that I look like I have boobs in the picture they used.

OK, I’ve got to get out and run before my mother in-law heads back to Houston.

I, also, got the RW trail edition today.  $5.99 + 5.5% state and city tax = $6.32 makes Wisconsin the cheap deal I guess.
Love the Zorba quote!  I can relate.
Don’t discount your ultra-creds.  You fit well in the company of Darcy, Anita & Kasie.
By the way, my son cried his first 18 months, got us kicked out of two apartments.  He had an amazing transformation when he began to walk.

Wow! Two apartments. That’s impressive.  Asa only cried for a year and never got us kicked out of anywhere.

Gotta get myself a copy of that issue! My gift subscription just ended and they didn’t even have the decency to send me the special trail issue. LAME.

Liza, I must get a copy of the RW!  You know, I was lucky with Ruby- she slept like a charm and was the most happy baby.  However, I still had the blues and we were away from family so that made it so much worse.  I remember crying alot and my husband buying me ice cream and cookies quite often.  Thank goodness I was able to stay home for her first year.  Then my husband got into medschool and I had to start working full time again- talk about delayed postpartum depression!

You have such a wonderful outlook on life Liza!  I know that these experiences are just a part of who we are.  I am looking forward to going to “resource” nursing only and being more of a “housewife” in June.  What I really look forward to is hitting the trails again!

“Homemaker.”  🙂  I hope the days until June fly quickly by.  (Not for me, I’ve still got to work on actually running up hillls before June 23.)
Thanks for the kind words.  Asa and Eliot taught me everything I know.  I don’t remember a lot of ice cream and cookie gifts from Eliot.  I think we were both too busy bouncing Asa up and down so he’d stop hollering.  I’m making up for that these days — which is what’s making the hill running so much harder.

Ha!ha!  oh yes, “homemaker.”  I remember writing ‘housewife” on a school form for my mother’s occupation and she made me change it to “homemaker.”  It used to be a real art and my mother sure was good at it.  She ran the house so efficiently- I remember her weekly menus she would write out.  I am not a good homemaker right now but I hope to find a balance!

        Good luck with those hills!

I’m excited to read the article! I’ve been lurking on your blog for a while, but have never left a comment… I’m a new mom (cutest 11 week old on the planet sleeping on my lap right now!), and just took my first run yesterday after 6 months off. Recovery to this point has been hard, so I’m always looking for stories of how other moms did it. I’ll read the newest issue of RW with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s 🙂

Thanks for the comment Beth!  I hope the run felt good yesterday.  Let me know if you need any stories of imperfection to motivate you along the way. 🙂  Mmmm.  Ice cream.

It was wonderful, but also slow and plodding and awkward and out of breath and felt kind of like my muscles were made of taffy. If that makes any sense.
