Ultrarunning Mom

Almost rock bottom

Hello from the fourth floor of the Hopkin’s Inn in Baltimore.  The walls are very thin in this old building, so I’m having to keep all the USA Network shows turned down very low.  I haven’t hit rock bottom with the hotel TV watching yet (I went to bed last night instead of sitting in front of the third episode of Law and Order: SVU), but it’s coming.  The class is going well and the weather has cooperated: cold and rain for the first two days.  (Hard to create the “Wilderness” of Wilderness First Responder in downtown Baltimore, it’s nice to have a tiny bit of weather.)  I’m missing the trails around home.  It’s going to be hard work to drag myself out of bed and onto the streets tomorrow morning.  Sidewalks.  Curbs.  Traffic.  For two hours.  Ick.  (So spoiled.)

Have you seen these nice images on the Sweat Science site from a study looking at age-related muscle loss?  Seems like disuse trumps age as a factor.  (Did I mention I’ll be turning 40 next month?)

Hang in there Liza! We are all looking forward to you coming back home! Gonna be a great Rockhopper party at Rocky! Stay safe.

    • Liza

Will do!  Getting ready to teach about shock and then head injuries, but thinking about pacing at Rocky.

  • Olgav100

40? Your life is only beginning:)

    • Olgav100

p.s. Jenn said you are nice and shall get after the record big time. Besides, you know, 40 and all…and why in the world have you still not accepted WS entry?

      • Liza

Thanks Olga!  I’m actually looking forward to turning 40.  Mostly because I’ll get to hand out cupcakes and party hats after Rocky.  I’ll find you.

I only accept cupcakes with skulls on them. Asa spoiled me.

          • Lizajanep

I can’t have skull cupcakes as my 40th bday cakes. Too grim. Pirates?

You in Baltimore?!  Did you bring my Mexican food as you promised?!

When you going back to SAT?  Care to come run with us in Rock Creek Park on Sunday morning?

    YF

    • Liza

I’d love to!  But I have to teach at 8 or 9 am.  What time do you all run?  Asa ate the Mexican food.

here is the link to our weekly schedule – http://georgetownrunningcompany.blogspot.com/2012/01/wednesday-and-sunday-workouts.html  For me, I will go run on Sunday morning at 9AM from The Line.

        Frowny face for my TexMex…

        • Liza

Thanks for the link.  That’s great.  I wish I could skip class on Sunday and run with you, but since I’m teaching, folks might notice.
I am sorry about the TexMex.  I will plan much better next time.   Chagrined face.

Glad to see that YF reads your blog! There is a guy who could run with you, but we have to get him on the trails. Baltimore is not so bad, but watching Law & Order SVU & staying downtown may induce a little hypervigilance. Remember to breath deeply (not outside, in your room) & think calming thoughts :)

Ran 27 loops of the Hopkins campus this morning. Entertained all the roving security guards. Smiled for all the security cameras.

Cool – Great Article Liza – As Chris McDougall says, “You don’t stop running because you get old; You get old because you stop running!”. I guess I’ll have to delay my mid-life (running) crisis until I’m 50 :-)

A kid in the class turned 33 yesterday and described himself as “middle-aged.”  I tossed a roll of athletic tape at him.
