Early morning and vampire bats

LizaLiza

Asa got up at 6:15 this morning. He was very excited to be awake and I didn’t have the heart to send him back to his room for half an hour.  I also wasn’t willing to give up my quiet morning time, so “Bob the Builder” is playing and Asa is wrapped up in my fluffy bathrobe on the couch.  I hate to have him spend time in front of the TV when it’s not some sort of emergency, but 6:15!  I don’t punch in until 6:45.  Well, at least naptime will come early.

The run at Government Canyon was great.  Niki Lake, the park’s resource specialist, is a bottomless wealth of knowledge (and one of the coolest people I know) and I had fun wearing my Javelina shirt and dispensing amorphous advice like “Run happy.”   (Well, it’s true.  You should.)  I talked blisters and calories too.  Most importantly I learned about this YouTube video: Vampire Bat on a Treadmill.  Eek.

And just to make your mornings a bit more unsettled, here’s a picture from the snake program we attended at Government Canyon on Saturday.

Coachwhips.  (I made up some great backstories on these herpetologists.)

And here’s Eliot’s reaction.  (That’s not a smile on his face.)

Coachwhip was the name of one of the trails that branched off of the Pemberton Trail at JJ100.  I’d never heard of it before, and Geof mentioned that he thought it was a type of snake…and now here’s this post, lol.  Funny how things happen.  Snakes = grooooooooss.
