Hello from the Boston airport! Eliot and I are lounging in the farthest corner of the C Terminal. It’s a desolate, plugless, coffee-less wasteland back here, but we’re content. Eliot’s still hip deep in bodice-ripping historical fiction about ancient Ireland and I’m having fun perusing my e-mail.
We managed to carry all our bags onto the plane, so we’re also feeling pretty flush. I kept expecting some airline official to challenge us about our bulky backpacks, but it never happened. I’m almost disappointed. Those “these dimensions only” containers have an air of challenge about them. I might have to hike the three miles to the nearest snack stand to buy an overpriced treat. Imaginary savings always burn a hole in my pocket. And it’s dinnertime in Ireland right now.
Oh, before I write anything else, I need to warn you not to watch the movie “Sanctum.”. Don’t do it. Ever. I watched it on the seven hour flight from Dublin and I should have volunteered to clean the bathrooms on the plane instead. It’s about cave divers exploring a huge cave system when a hurricane hits. There’s strong emotion, flooding, and lots of death. Let me ruin things entirely for you just in case you’re thinking it doesn’t sound too bad. Everybody dies. Well, one guy lives, but you don’t really care. Eliot watched the movie first and tried to save me when he saw I’d tuned into the same thing. He covered the screen and mouthed, “Stop now before it’s too late.” I ignored him. How bad could it be? I was trapped on a plane. I will say once I realized everybody was going to die, it was fun to guess what drowning expression they’d choose etc.
In running news, I have created a beautiful training plan for the Heartland 100. I’m going to focus on increasing my speed. I won’t register for a few more weeks to see how my foot holds up. If I have too go a bit more slowly, I’ll sign up for the Javelina 100. I’ll start posting the training log tomorrow and nutrition logs once I get home. Hope you all are having a wonderful weekend. And thanks so much to those folks who sent ideas about alternate races. It was wonderful to feel part of a community. Blogs are good things. 🙂

Do you guys ever post pics online? I’d love to see the Italian circus at the aid station, and any castles or wet-suited swims would delight my daughter. Surely you’re bringing Asa photos of Irish firetrucks?

Sorry I didn’t send a race suggestion yet. It is hard for me to get my head around making your first race be a 100miler. Me… I haven’t made my training plan for my Nov 15k yet. (Rockledge Rumble; wish I thought I could try the 30k or 50k “real” distances.)

I posted some pictures on the July 14th post that I just put up. (I had to bend time a little.)

Javelina 100!!!! My husband, Geof, and I are running it together this year. It’s going to be a blast of a race. I volunteered, and then paced 40 miles when Geof ran it in 2009. It is a great, great race 🙂

Sanctum is officially scratched off the list. Caves AND drowning?! That sounds like a claustrophobic nightmare, so thanks for the tip!

I’m thinking more and more Javelina. I’m working a 10 day field course in New Mexico at the end of September and I won’t be able to run, so that’ll make Heartland more challenging. And costumes and getting to meet you… 🙂

Woohoo!! It’s such a fun time for runner and crew alike, and it’s a super crew-friendly environment…they stay in the same spot all day, and you see them every 15ish miles. Can’t beat that. Your hot weather in TX is great training for the hot day we’ll have in AZ that day (*nudge, nudge*)! 🙂
