Small feet bound to Tucson

LizaLiza

So the TSA woman just hollered out: “Those are the smallest shoes I’ve ever seen!” She was looking at my shoes in the bin in front of her. Really? I find this hard to believe. Honestly I think she was looking at a size 8 1/2. But she really looked incredulous and then leaned over the conveyor belt to get a look at my feet. The people behind me in line looked too. I imagine they expected to see something freakish. Bound feet peaking out from below my jeans.
Nope.
TSA-lady looked like she expected some response from me, (I know! You can’t imagine how hard it is not to topple over all the time.), but I was at a loss. I smiled and shrugged. Thankfully the body scanner lady signaled me over before TSA-lady made any other observations.
I’m in the new terminal of the San Antonio airport enjoying all the access to plugs. I meant to take a picture of the giant gold sculpture hanging from the ceiling near ticketing for you, but I forgot. It looks like an enormous hair scrunchy. In a nice way.
I’m still a bit of an emotional wreck after saying goodbye to Asa and Eliot (almost cried when I saw a toddler throwing a tantrum by the McDonalds), but it is sooooo nice to be sitting still right now. I didn’t get a run in before I left, but I’m sure I covered a good 16 miles running all over the house finding stuff to put in my duffle bag and cleaning up. I vacuumed and mopped and straightened — for the nanny. I want her to think well of me, of course. I’m boarding now, so more from Tucson tomorrow. Thank you so much for all the book suggestions! Y’all are awesome. I want to make my way through all of them eventually. I’ve narrowed it down, but I haven’t decided which one I’ll take on this trip yet. I’m hoping to convince my co-instructor he should choose something from the list too.
Oh, and check out this piece in the Running Times by Anton Krupicka about why he runs if you haven’t already. It’s great — and well-written.

(Sorry I’m typing on the phone and I can’t figure out how to do links yet.)
I’m going to try to work it into the course somehow.

Thanks for that article link Liza. Man, Anton can write! Reading that article made me want to get my shoes on and run up a damn mountain and feel authentic for pete’s sake.
He is, of course, so right in many ways. I can’t pretend when I am pushing myself to make the last mile.
I wear so many different hats in my life right now. My running is keeping me true to myself, that’s for sure.
Enjoy Tucson! Should be nice weather. I am heading down to Phoenix next week to be with my dad in surgery. I grew up there- don’t like it but I do miss the smell of orange blossoms in the Spring…

I hope your father’s surgery goes well and he returns to good health soon. Safe travels.

Thanks Liza- My dad is 91 years old. I feel so fortunate to still have him clear minded and pretty strong!
I am the only medical person in the family other than my husband so I am grateful I can be with him!

I can’t push to the limit every run. I need running to recharge me mentally as much as anything and I need non-gut wrenching runs for that.

I knew a woman who wore the shoes they used as sample displays to save space – maybe size 3 or 4; unfortunately, they usually only carried one of each pair!

Running tends to spread one’s feet. Over decades and tens of thousands of miles, I went from a 9 1/2 to 11 1/2 and am starting to look at 12’s. Not a great trend.

A couple more years and you’ll be limited in shoe brand choice. Any size 15s?

    Liza,
I wonder if that security lady saw you and thought how tiny you are and just blurted out about your shoes without even seeing them. Like she was really thinking, “You are so small!” And then she saw your shoes and was like “oh”.
I used to wear a size 7 and after pregnancy and some running I am now an 8. I suppose I will be a 9 in a year or so if I keep this up!
