Valentines and hill work

LizaLiza

Apparently Valentine’s Day is the new Halloween.  Asa came home with quite the haul from school yesterday.  I’ll be meting out candy for days.  One mom also sent in a good-sized stuffed animal for each of the twelve children.  Really?  I feel pretty secure about the vaguely heart-shaped valentines Asa cut out red poster board for his little classmates.  That said, Asa loves his new plush elephant.  So thanks, Overachieving Rich Mom.

I’m back to training again.  I did some hill repeats in Government Canyon yesterday.  My guidance was to work the uphills and take the downhills easy.  Compliance with those kind of guidelines is not a problem;  Aren’t all uphills work?  Nueces is pretty hilly, so I imagine I’ll be doing a lot of hill work between now and March 5th.  I ran the marathon out there last year and I remember it being one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.  I’m not sure how much of that was Rocky fatigue and how much was the terrain.  Seems unlikely I’ll be able to tease those two apart this year either.  We’ll see.  Camp Eagle, where the event is held, is absolutely gorgeous, and it’ll be wonderful to run out there regardless.  The Texas Hill Country doesn’t get much lovelier.

I saw an unknown trail runner while I was at Government Canyon and the compression- knee-sock-wearing-trail-running community is small enough here in San Antonio that I introduced myself immediately and asked him his intentions.  My friend, Chris, would have been proud.  “So… training for anything in particular?”  He was not.  I forgot to invite him out to Eisenhower Park on Thursday.  Remember, if you’re in town here, you should come join us at Ike at 5:30 or at Freetails afterwards around 6:30.  All speeds and experience levels welcome.  No tight knee socks required.

I’ve made a bit of peace with the food log.  I still hate doing it, but it’s kind of resigned hatred now.

I ran at GC on Sunday with the dog, only in the front country, of course. It was nice to feel trails after “recovering” on concrete/asphalt earlier in the week. The major accomplishment for the day was runing five of those trail miles in my barefoot Vibram shoes. My officemates poked fun at my stair technique yesterday (hold breath, attempt to descend without calf muscles, attempt to heel strike and roll down without calf muscles, repeat).

Anyway, I’ll plan to see you all at Freetail’s on Thursday!

I agree about Valentine’s being the new Halloween for the pre-school set. We have A LOT of candy in our house. A lot.

Um, yeah. I was thinking the same thing about vday. Apparently it gets worse in kindergarden, because everyone in the class (minus us) gave candy with vday cards!

It’s not so much that I don’t want treats to be given out — as much as it’s that I want treats that I like. Dark chocolate kids! Enough with the lollipops.

Do you ever run up the powerline hill next to Crownridge Canyon Natural Area? Short, but brutal. It’s the steepest non-paved hill I’ve found in SA proper.

My kids’ preschool suffers from Overachieving Rich Mom syndrome, as well. 😉

About Nueces, if it isn’t a competitive secret, what shoes will you be wearing?
    Thanks

Ooh, I wish I had some secret competitive gear. 🙂
I’ll be wearing New Balance MT 101s. I figure if they can handle Bandera like they did, they can handle Nueces no problem.
